Four teams await NCAA's announcement
SALISBURY, Md. – Four Salisbury University fall sports are awaiting the announcement of their postseason fate as the NCAA will release the participants and their schedules for the men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey and volleyball tournaments on Monday, Nov. 5.
The No. 15 Salisbury volleyball team knows it will be in the field, by virtue of the squad’s 3-0 win against Marymount (Va.) University in the Capital Athletic Conference championship match earlier today. The Sea Gulls will be making the program’s eighth NCAA tournament appearance and fifth in the past six years. The Salisbury women’s soccer team came up one step shy of the CAC’s automatic berth, falling in penalty kicks to Frostburg State University in the conference title game. Salisbury has made four NCAA tournament appearances, including a trip to the dance last season. The Salisbury men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat in double overtime of the semifinals of the CAC tournament, but will look to Monday’s selection to see if they will continue play in 2012. Salisbury has made 10 NCAA tournament appearances, including four of the past five years. The No. 2 Salisbury field hockey team will most likely be first team to find out its tournament plans, as the NCAA is expected to release the tournament field late Sunday night or early Monday morning. The Salisbury field hockey program has made 29 NCAA tournament appearances and won five national championships. The NCAA will not have a selection show for Division III field hockey, check www.suseagulls.com for information on the NCAA tournament field, as it becomes available.
These four tournaments begin this week. Salisbury’s other three fall teams will also compete in NCAA post-season events this month. The men’s and women’s cross country teams will travel to Carlisle, Pa., for the NCAA Mideast Regional this Saturday, Nov. 10.
The No. 21 Salisbury football team earned the Empire 8 Athletic Conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament with a 63-23 win against Utica College this past Saturday. The Sea Gulls will open play in the postseason on Nov. 17.
