TUCSON, Ariz. – The Salisbury University baseball team will begin the 2013 season ranked No. 11 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper preseason poll, announced recently.
Salisbury earned 240 points in the first poll of the season, finishing just out of the top 10, behind Trinity University (Texas) at No. 10 with 243 points. Wheaton (Mass.) College, runner-up in the 2012 NCAA tournament to Marietta College, was chosen as the top team in the country, collecting 269 points.
The University of St. Thomas (267), the State University of New York at Cortland (263), Birmingham Southern College (262) and Marietta (259) round out the top five.
The Sea Gulls will play five games against teams in the preseason poll. SU faces Cortland in a three-game home series Feb. 23-24 and No. 6 Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va., on March 6 at 2 p.m., as well as at the SU Baseball Field on March 12 at 2 p.m.
Salisbury, which finished 2012 with a 34-9 record, earned its 13th consecutive and 18th overall NCAA tournament appearance after claiming the program's 10th Capital Athletic Conference title last year. The Gulls advanced to the NCAA Newport News Regional final, falling to CNU.
SU opens the season with a home-and home series with Virginia Wesleyan College on Feb. 10-11. The Sea Gulls host the Marlins opening day at 1 p.m., and travel to Virginia Beach, Va., the next day, a 2 p.m., start.
