Salisbury No. 9 in preseason top 25

MINNEAPOLIS – The Salisbury University baseball team is ranked No. 9 in the top 25 preseason poll, the website announced on Wednesday.

The Sea Gulls garnered 386 points in the poll to finish ahead of 10th-ranked Webster University (361). College World Series runner up Wheaton (Mass.) College was chosen to top the poll with 594 points and eight of 25 first-place votes. The University of St. Thomas (586 points, three first-place votes) and defending national champion, Marietta College (578 points, 14 first-place votes), rounded out the top-three teams.

Salisbury will play two teams in the preseason top 25 in the fourth-ranked State University of New York at Cortland and No. 8 Christopher Newport University. SU hosts the Red Dragons, who earned 564 points in the poll, in a three-game series Feb. 23-24 at the SU Baseball Field, while CNU and the Gulls will play a pair. The Captains, who received 411 points in the poll, hosts the Sea Gulls March 6 before traveling to Salisbury on March 12.

Salisbury (34-9 in 2012) advanced to its 13th consecutive and 18th overall NCAA tournament appearance after claiming the program's 10th Capital Athletic Conference title last year. The Gulls played in the NCAA Newport News Regional final, falling to CNU.
