Root named to first Team of the Week for 2013

MINNEAPOLIS – Salisbury University junior center fielder Bill Root has been named to the first Team of the Week for 2013, the website announced on Tuesday.

Root led Salisbury (2-0) to wins over Virginia Wesleyan College and the University of Maine Presque Isle, 5-3 and 10-4, respectively, last week, hitting .571 (4-for-7). He had two doubles, two RBIs and three walks for the ninth-ranked Sea Gulls with an .857 slugging percentage and .700 on-base percentage.

Root, a Coatesville, Pa., native, got on base six times against UMPI with the two doubles, two RBIs, three walks, a single and three runs scored. He also stole his 50th career base with a first-inning swipe of second. is in its second season of recognizing the top performances at nine positions from the week with the Team of the Week.
