GLASSBORO, N.J. – The No. 19 Salisbury University baseball team fell to No. 2 Rowan University on Monday afternoon at Rowan Baseball Field, 3-1.
It was a pitchers' duel between the Sea Gulls (25-10) and Profs (26-6) through the first five innings of play, as the two offenses combined for only three hits.
However, Rowan made the most of a Salisbury fielding error in the sixth inning that led to two unearned runs on a single and a sacrifice fly. Another fielding error in the seventh pushed Rowan out to a 3-0 lead.
The Sea Gulls would find their way into the run column in the eighth inning. Will Gutekunst led off the inning with a triple to right center field. Jay Perry followed with a sacrifice fly to left field to bring Gutekunst home. A walk, and single, and a fielding error – all with two outs – allowed Salisbury to load up the bases, But Rowan was able to get out of the inning with limited damage and a 3-1 lead that it would never relinquish.
Salisbury starting pitcher Connor Reeves (10-3) took the loss, despite not allowing a single earned run. He finished the afternoon having worked 6 2/3 innings, while issuing six hits and striking out three batters.
The team returns to action on Tuesday, April 24 when it travels to Gallaudet University. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
