McMurdo, Griffin, Carter earn preseason All-American honors from USA Football News

ROSELAND, N.J. – Three Salisbury University football players have been named 2012 USA Football News Division III Preseason All-Americans, the organization announced recently.

Senior linebacker Matt McMurdo was named to the first team on defense, senior quarterback Dan Griffin to the third team on offense and junior cornerback Andre Carter was chosen as an honorable mention on defense. All three were also selected as preseason south region all-stars.

The teams were compiled by coaches, sports information directors, pro scouts, national media reporters and USA Football News staff.

McMurdo was a 2011 All-Empire 8 First Team selection last season after finishing third on the team in solo tackles (27), assisted tackles (46) and total tackles (73). McMurdo also had six for a loss and 2.5 sacks a year ago.

Griffin, who was the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Year and a first team selection last year, threw for 1,208 yards and 15 touchdowns and ran for another 907 yards and 20 scores to lead the Sea Gulls. A Second Team All-Region pick in 2011, Griffin comes into the season tied for seventh in career points scored all-time (198) and 10th all-time in passing yards (1,659).

Carter was an Empire 8 first team choice and Third Team All-Region selection last year after making seven interceptions, breaking up six passes and forcing one fumble. He was in on 36 tackles, including 24 solo. Carter is tied for seventh all-time at Salisbury with 10 interceptions.

SU opens the season at Christopher Newport University on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m.
