ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Salisbury University senior quarterback Dan Griffin and sophomore linebacker Steven Gamble have been named Empire 8 Co-Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Monday.
The pair helped the No. 21 Sea Gulls defeat Utica College, 63-23, on Saturday to claim the Empire 8's automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament.
Griffin ran for a career-high five touchdowns on 17 carries and 142 yards. He recorded TD runs of 2, 56, 4, 2 and 1 yard on the day. The Jarrettsville, Md., native averaged 8.4 yards per carry, while also adding 47 passing yards.
Griffin's 30 points moved him within one touchdown of trying for the program lead in all-time points scored at 258.
He shared the weekly honor with Utica's Jeremy Meier.
Gamble blocked an extra-point attempt following the Pioneers scoring a third-quarter touchdown. It was Salisbury's fourth blocked kick of the season.
Gamble, a Rockville, Md., native, added four tackles, one for loss, a forced fumble and recovery and a pass broken up.
Salisbury (7-2, 5-1 E8) travels to Frostburg State University for the 14th annual Regents Cup Game Saturday at 1 p.m., to close the regular season.
