ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Salisbury University football team swept the Empire 8 weekly awards with seniors Dan Griffin and Paul Moore claiming Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week and sophomore Isaiah Taylor picking up Special Teams Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Salisbury defeated Frostburg State University, 48-2, in the 14th annual Regents Cup Game on Saturday to capture the E8 championship outright for the second consecutive season with a 6-1 record in league play.
Senior quarterback Dan Griffin became Salisbury's all-time leading scorer in the victory. He ran for 70 yards and two touchdowns and was 4-of-8 with 116 yards and another TD through the air.
Griffin tied the SU all-time scoring mark with a 15-yard rushing score in the first quarter and added a 2-yard plunge in the third to claim sole possession of the top spot with 270 points.
Griffin earned the Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
Moore returned a fumble 20 yards for his third touchdown of the season in the first quarter against the Bobcats. He added five tackles and a pass broken up to help lead the defensive effort.
Taylor returned a Frostburg State punt 70 yards for a touchdown. The punt-return TD was the first for SU since Oct. 3, 2009. Taylor earned the Salisbury Regents Cup McGlinchey MVP for the game as he also caught four passes for 116 yards and a 37-yard touchdown.
The victory was Head Coach Sherman Wood's 100th in his 14 years at his alma mater. Wood will be honored for the accomplishment at halftime of Thursday's men's basketball game against Washington College, which is slated for 7:30 p.m.
SU (8-2) hosts Rowan University in an NCAA tournament first round game at Sea Gull Stadium this Saturday at noon.
