Five Salisbury players named D3football.com all-region
MINNEAPOLIS – Five Salisbury University football players have been named to the 2012 D3football.com All-East Team, the website announced on Tuesday.
Senior center Brian Mansfield, junior cornerback Andre Carter and sophomore punter Kyle Hamby were named to the first team while senior linebacker Matt McMurdo and sophomore linebacker Steven Gamble earned second- and third-team honors, respectively.
The D3football.com all-region teams were selected in balloting by sports information directors in each region and D3football.com staff. All players nominated for all-region consideration are also eligible for the All-America Teams, which will be announced next Friday, Dec. 14, as part of D3football.com's Stagg Bowl coverage.
Mansfield, SU's starting center for the last two years, was a first-team All-Empire 8 selection this season. He has helped the Sea Gulls run for the eighth most yards per game in Division III this season at 273.33 and was part of the line that earned Beyond Sports Network Division III Offensive Line of the Week after Salisbury racked up 611 yards of offense, 564 of those and nine touchdowns on the ground in a win against Utica College on Nov. 3.
Carter earned his second consecutive first-team E8 selection after leading the league with 18 passes broken up. He also had 42 tackles, including 3.5 for loss and two fumble recoveries on the year. He has placed 20 of 52 punts inside the 20-yard line to lead the league. Hamby booted four punts of at least 60 yards this season, including a school-record-breaking 84-yard bomb in the second round of the NCAA tournament against Widener University. He was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week twice, E8 Special Teams Player of the Week and BSN Division III Punter of the Week once each this season.
McMurdo claimed all-conference first-team honors this season and was named a preseason All-American by USA Football News, BSN and the D3Senior Classic. He was second on the team with 72 tackles, and led the team in assisted tackles with 45.
