Sea Gulls sink Captains, 3-2, with three goals in second half

SALISBURY, Md. – After being down by a goal for a majority of the game, against No. 17 Christopher Newport University, the No. 4 Salisbury University field hockey team scored three goals in the second half to win 3-2.

The Captains (2-1) took the early lead 55 seconds into the game as Marlene Lichty took a quick shot from inside the top of the circle for the 1-0 advantage.

Salisbury (3-0) trailed Christopher Newport at the half as the Captains had a 5-4 advantage in shots and 4-3 edge in corners. Senior Amber Holland notched two defensive saves while junior Katie Hastings registered one to help out sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Clewer, who recored three saves in the first half.

The Sea Gulls turned the tides in the second half, scoring three goals in four minutes starting with sophomore Summer Washburn scoring at the 48:58 mark. Washburn took a pass from senior Melissa Slocum, striking the ball to the left corner past Captain goalie Jamie Dowling (six saves). Nearly a minute later, senior Erica Henderson took a center pass from Washburn, dribbled past a defender and took a shot that bounced into the right corner for the 2-1 lead.

To finish the scoring run, freshman Jessica Crew scored the game-winner off a penalty corner. Crew scored from the right side off Holland's pass to put SU up 3-1.

Christopher Newport closed the scoring gap with 14 minutes left to play as Shelby Judkins put one in the net from Lindsay Hendricks, off a penalty corner, but the Sea Gulls' fight proved too much for the Captains, winning 3-2.

Salisbury will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 8, as they host Husson University in the first game of the Salisbury University Field Hockey Invitational. SU will face the Eagles at 11 a.m., on Saturday.
