ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – In its first Capital Athletic Conference appearance of the season the No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team took down St. Mary's (Md.) College, 5-1. The Sea Gulls have outscored the Seahawks 109-6 since 1994.
Salisbury (8-0, 1-0 CAC) scored just 49 seconds into the contest to put the Seahawks behind, 1-0, early on. Senior Erica Henderson finished a strong centering pass from classmate Melissa Slocum to put in her first of three goals of the day.
Henderson scored SU's second goal of the match as the Sea Gulls went into halftime up 2-0 against St. Mary's.
The second half was more of the same as Salisbury dominated possession, scoring three additional goals.
Henderson recorded her first hat-trick of the season, fourth of her career, scoring her final goal of the contest as junior Emily Voshell took a hard shot from the top of the circle, deflecting off the senior forward's stick.
St. Mary's (4-3, 0-1 CAC) scored its only goal of the match with 25 minutes remaining but from then on the Salisbury offense took control.
Junior Mallory Elliott scored her second goal of the year, collecting a cross from Slocum to increase SU's lead to 4-1. Salisbury's last goal would come off a penalty corner, as junior Stacey Lamboni drove the ball right through the St. Mary's defense for her first goal of the season.
Salisbury continues on the road as they head to Johns Hopkins University for a Wednesday, Sept. 26, night game. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
