INDIANAPOLIS – After waiting anxiously to see if the No. 2 Salisbury University field hockey team would receive an at-large bid into the 2012 NCAA Division III Field Hockey tournament, the Sea Gulls received some welcome news from the NCAA Field Hockey Selection Committee.
The Sea Gulls earned a first-round bye in the tournament and will be hosting the second and third rounds on Nov. 10 and 11, but must await the outcome of Rowan University (15-6) and the Univeristy of Rochester (N.Y.) (16-5) on Nov. 7 to discover their opponent.
Salisbury and Rowan have met 35 times in the programs' history, with Salisbury holding a 22-12-1 edge in the all-time series, including a 2-1 win earlier this season at Rowan. The Gulls have never faced Rochester in field hockey.
The championship bracket consists of 24 teams, eight of which received first-round byes. There will be 16 teams who compete on Wednesday, Nov. 7 to move on to the second round, which will be hosted at four campus sites.
This tournament appearance marks Salisbury's 30th NCAA appearance and 19th consecutive.
Also receiving a first-round bye in the Salisbury regional is Montclair State University who awaits the decision of the Christopher Newport University and Gwynedd-Mercy College contest on Wednesday.
SU will play in their second-round match on Nov. 10. Playing times have yet to be determined for Saturday; check www.suseagulls.com for more information as it becomes available. Saturday's winners will meet on Sunday at Sea Gull Stadium for the right to advance to the national semifinals, played in Geneva, N.Y., on Nov. 17.
