FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its 2017 preseason coaches' poll for field hockey and Salisbury University was tabbed as the unanimous choice to defend its conference title.
The Sea Gulls earned the maximum 36 points and six first-place votes (coaches may not vote for their own team), standing six points clear of Christopher Newport University, which garnered 30 points and the remaining first-place vote to finish second in the poll.
The University of Mary Washington picked up 27 points to place third and York College of Pennsylvania received 22 points to finish fourth in the poll.
Salisbury went 18-2 last season, including a 6-0 record in CAC play before winning the 20th CAC title in program history. The Sea Gulls earned the automatic qualification to the NCAA tournament and advanced to the program's 14th semifinal appearance.
The Sea Gulls begin the 2017 season this Friday, September 1 when they travel to Misericordia University for a tournament, facing off against King's (Pa.) College in a match set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
