YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference announced its preseason men's basketball coaches' poll for the 2016-17 season on Friday and Salisbury University has been picked to finish second in the league this year.
Defending champion Christopher Newport University has been unanimously picked to win the league, earning 81 points and the maximum nine first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team), with Salisbury garnering 69 points in the poll, followed by the University of Mary Washington, with 67 points and the final first-place vote.
St. Mary's College of Maryland collected 54 points and York College of Pennsylvania had 42 to round out the top five.
Salisbury went 21-7 overall and 13-5 in league play to finish second in the CAC last year, and advanced to the CAC championship game, falling to Christopher Newport in overtime. Salisbury earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, where it fell on a final-second play to Middlebury College.
The Sea Gulls begin play in the 2016-17 season on Tuesday, November 15, taking on Goucher College at Maggs Physical Activities Center, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
