Sea Gulls fall to Rowan

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team squared off against Rowan University on Wednesday evening, falling to the Profs, 87-69. 

The Profs (6-4) shot 56 percent from the field, connecting on 33-of-59 shots for the evening, including 55 percent from behind the three-point arc, where they hit 11 of their 20 tries, to earn the victory.

Rowan took a 44-42 lead into the break and never relinquished it, holding the Sea Gull offense in check over the final 20 minutes while netting 43 points while holding the maroon and gold to just 27. The game saw six ties and seven lead changes, all of which came in the first half. 

Rowan held the lead for 29:18 of game time while Salisbury (5-4) only controlled the lead for 5:54.

Chad Barcikowski dominated the opening half of action accounting for 12 of Salisbury's 42 first half points. Barcikowski went 5-of-11 from the field including a 2-of-5 performance from behind the three-point arc. 

The first half saw a back and forth battle with neither team leading by more than six. Salisbury owned the largest lead of the first stanza posting a six-point lead, 16-10, at the 14:46 mark. The Profs battled back to take their largest lead of the game, at that point, by five on four separate occasions.

Each team was dominant from the field in the opening half shooting over 40 percent as the Gulls were 18-of-43 while the Profs were 17-of-30 including going 60 percent from three, knocking down six of its 10 three point attempts. 

In the first 10 minutes of the second half, Rowan began to pull away pushing its lead to 64-52, the first double-digit lead for either team the night. The 12-point lead did not last long as James Foley knocked down his only three-pointer for the evening to get Salisbury back within nine. 

With under five minutes left to play Mike Ward netted seven of his 10 points for the night embarking on a 7-0 run of his own. Ward hit a jumper, a three-pointer, and capped it off with a made layup after contact to draw the foul, cutting the deficit to 13. 

Four members of the maroon and gold netted double-digit points with Barcikowski leading the way with 14. Blair Davis finished his night with 12 while both Al Leder and Ward totaled 10. The team was held to a 35 percent night from the field knocking down 29-of-81 shots. 

Salisbury returns to action on Friday, December 29 when it travels to the College of Staten of Island for the Tournament of Heroes. The Sea Gulls with take on the host Dolphins on day one with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
