Berkman and Maynard selected to play in 2009 Division III North-South game
BALTIMORE - Two Salisbury University men's lacrosse players were selected to play in the prestigious United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III North-South game that will take place on May 24, 2009, at Harvard Stadium in Boston at 2 p.m. The two Sea Gull players are senior midfielder Kylor Berkman and senior defenseman Kevin Maynard.
The game is part of a tripleheader that will feature the Division I/II North-South game played at 4 p.m. and a Major League Lacrosse game between the Boston Cannons and the Denver Outlaws at 7:30 p.m.
Berkman, the reigning Division III National Player of the Year, concludes his career with the Sea Gulls as one of the best players to ever don the maroon and gold. In 2009, the co-captain finished first on the team in points (83), assists (41), game winning goals (three), man-up goals (11) and was third on the team in goals (42) and fourth on the team in ground balls (49). The Salisbury, Md., native concludes his career with 298 points (second all-time in SU history) as he dished out 170 assists (second all-time in program history) in 86 games played. The 2009 Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year finished his career with 251 ground balls (10th in program history), 66 caused turnovers (ninth in SU history since 1990), 20 man-up goals (tied for second this decade at SU) and seven game-winning goals (fifth this decade).
Maynard, a two-year starter for the Sea Gulls, concludes his four-year career in the maroon and gold. In 2009, the co-captain played and started in all 20 games, was third on the team in caused turnovers (25) and fifth on the team in ground balls with 42. For his career, the Salisbury, Md., native played in 54 games, scooped up 78 ground balls and caused 48 turnovers.
Throughout their careers the two have compiled a career record of 82-5. During that time the Sea Gulls won two NCAA Division III national championships, made three straight national championship appearances and won four CAC championships.
The two Sea Gulls will be joined by familiar company on the South team as nine of their teammates on the squad were members of opposing SU teams in '09. The South squad will be coached by Tom Leanos the head coach at Drew University.
