Salisbury picked No. 1 by Lacrosse Magazine, Berkman tabbed as preseason DIII POY

BALTIMORE - The two-time defending NCAA Division III national champion Salisbury University men's lacrosse program received another preseason No. 1 ranking on Monday as the Sea Gulls are perched atop the 2009 Lacrosse magazine poll.

Salisbury finished a record breaking season in ‘08 as the Sea Gulls went a perfect 22-0 en route to the program's eighth national championship, fifth in six years. The Sea Gulls continued several unbelievable win streaks in ‘08 and will enter the '09 season with the nation's longest current win streak (45 games), the longest home winning streak (74 games), a 77-0 regular-season win streak and a perfect 100-0 mark in conference play .

Lacrosse also announced its preseason players of the year and SU senior midfielder Kylor Berkman was tabbed as the top player in Division III men's lacrosse. This is the second preseason national player of the year honor for the son of SU coach Jim Berkman, the all-time winningest coach in men's lacrosse history.  Kylor was selected by Face-Off Yearbook, earlier this month, as its Division III National and Midfielder of the Year and was also picked as one of the top 10 players in all of college lacrosse.

Kylor Berkman, the reigning Division III Player of the Year and two-time Division III Midfielder of the Year, embarks on his senior season at SU. The two-time first-team All-American led the Gulls in assists (49) last season and was second in points (83) and fourth in goals (34). The Salisbury, Md., native was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2008 NCAA Division III national championship game as he scored five goals and two assists in the 19-13 win over No. 2 SUNY Cortland in Foxborough, Mass.

Salisbury's '09 schedule features four teams ranked in the Lacrosse preseason top 20, all of which are in the first nine spots. The four teams are No. 6 Lynchburg (Feb. 21 on the road), No. 2 Gettysburg (Mar. 28 at home), No. 9 Stevenson (Apr. 4 at home) and No. 8 Washington (Md.) College (Apr. 25 on the road).
