Cannone, Sellers sign with Long Island, Rochester of Major League Lacrosse

BOSTON – Former Salisbury University men's lacrosse attackman Matt Cannone and defenseman Andrew Sellers have signed contracts with the Long Island Lizards and Rochester Rattlers, respectively, of the Major League Lacrosse League (MLL) on Wednesday.

Cannone and Sellers were signed via the eight-team league's waiver process, consisting of undrafted college senior free agents and were the only non-Division I players picked up on waivers. Terms of the players' deals were not disclosed. Cannone and Sellers are now eligible to play beginning in Week 7 of the MLL season.

Cannone finished his career at Salisbury with 216 goals and 153 assists for 369 points in 87 games. The Bayport, N.Y., native was a four-time USILA All-American, being named to the first team in 2011 and 2012 and honorable mention in 2009 and 2010. He also earned 2012 USILA National Attackman of the Year. He led the country in points per game (5.91), was second in assists per game (3.05) and 18th in goals per game (2.86) in 2012.

Cannone ranks second in SU history in goals and points and third in assists.

Sellers anchored a Salisbury defense that allowed just five goals per game, the second-lowest total nationally, on his way to being named the 2012 USILA National Defenseman of the Year. A Baltimore native, Sellers earned first team All-America honors this season and was an honorable mention All-American in 2011.

In 60 career games, he scooped up 104 ground balls and caused 65 turnovers.

The Sea Gulls capped their seventh undefeated season with their second straight NCAA championship, a 14-10 win over the State University of New York at Cortland, in Foxborough, Mass., on May 27.

Cannone's Lizards and Sellers' Rattlers are currently tied in the MLL standings at 2-2, 1.5 games behind the Boston Cannons and Chesapeake Bayhawks at 4-1.
