NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 11 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team picked up a big road victory on Wednesday night defeating Capital Athletic Conference opponent No. 17 Christopher Newport University, 6-5.
The Sea Gulls (9-3, 3-1 CAC) earned the victory behind a strong defensive effort throughout the game including a late stand in the final 17 seconds that included a last-second shot ringing off the crossbar. As a unit the maroon and gold combined for 12 caused turnovers and scooped up 25 groundballs.
Salisbury used a two-goal fourth quarter to help secure the conference victory. Griffin Moroney and Zach Pompea each netted goals in the final frame, with Pompea's lone marker of the game proving to be the difference maker.
The Captains (10-2, 3-1 CAC) managed to battle back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to level the game at 4-4 early in the fourth quarter. Moroney, who netted two goals for the evening, tallied his final marker of the night to give the Sea Gulls a 5-4 lead with just over 10 minutes left to play.
Will Nowesnick led the defensive unit with a team-best four groundballs as well as adding two caused turnovers, while Jeremiah LaClair posted a team-high three caused turnovers. LaClair also added a goal to his stat line to aid in the victory.
Brandon Warren finished the game with 10 saves to pick up his sixth win of the season.
Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, April 7 when it takes on No. 5 Cabrini University in a non-conference showdown. Face-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
