May 17, 2018

The number seven ranked Salisbury University men’s lacrosse team earned a hard fought and thrilling 9-7 victory over number nine Dickinson College on Wednesday night in the NCAA quarterfinal round at Sea Gull Stadium. Defense led the way for the Sea Gulls as the unit forced 19 Dickinson turnovers while causing 12 of them. Senior defensemen Kyle Tucker led the way for the defense forcing a team-high and career-best seven while also scooping up another team-best six groundballs. It is the fourteenth time this season in 22 games that the defense has forced double-digit turnovers in a game. Brandon Warren was equally impressive tallying 10 saves in the contest including one in the final 59 seconds to help preserve the win. It is the fourth time this season Warren has tallied double-digit saves. Griffin Moroney got the offense going netting the game’s opening tally to give the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead. It is Moroney’s tenth goal of the postseason and seventh in the NCAA tournament. Parker Stevens pushed the maroon and gold advantage to 2-0 when he picked a loose ball in the defensive end and went coast-to-coast finishing with a bounce shot between the legs of Red Devil goalie Cole Pellicano for his third tally of the season. Jarrett Bromwell doubled the Salisbury lead when he converted the Sea Gulls only man up opportunity on the night to push the lead to 4-0. Austin Short finished the night as the Gulls leading scorer netting a team-best two goals. Short tallied two markers in the third quarter giving the maroon and gold an 8-4 lead heading into the final quarter. Salisbury also saw arguably the hustle play of the postseason from junior Zach Pompea as he tracked down a loose ball near midfield and managed to knock it back into play and teammate Corey Gwin was able to pick up the groundball and feed Josh Melton, who found a cutting Emory Wongus, who fired it past Pellicano for his lone marker of the night. With the win Salisbury advances to the national semifinal against Gettysburg College at Gettysburg. A game time and date have yet to be announced.
