SALISBURY, Md. – The second ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team will begin its 2019 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament run on Wednesday, May 8 against State University of New York Maritime College at 5 p.m., at Sea Gull Stadium.

How we got here
Salisbury advanced to the 2019 men's lacrosse tournament by way of the automatic qualifier after defeating No. 4 York College of Pennsylvania in the Capital Athletic Conference championship, 13-7, on May 4. Brandon Warren anchored a strong defensive performance as he made 16 saves while the unit as a whole held the Spartans to a 2-of-6 mark on man-up and forced 13 turnovers. Offensively, Cross Ferrara led the way with a team-high four goals while Josh Melton and Austin Short each netted two.
How they got here
SUNY Maritime advanced to the second round behind a thrilling 14-13 overtime victory against Grove City College in the first round on Tuesday afternoon. The Privateers were paced by leading scorer Matt DeMeo, who totaled a team-best eight points with another team-high seven goals on 10 shots. However, it was Brett Trodden's lone goal of the afternoon that punched SUNY Maritime's ticket to the next round.
These two programs have met just one time in their histories back on March 26, 1986 in Salisbury, Maryland. The Sea Gulls got the better of the Privateers that afternoon, as they downed the visiting team 26-10.
Scouting the Privateers
SUNY Maritime entered the 2019 Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament with second-best offense in the Skyline Athletic Conference as the Privateers totaled 246 goals for an average of 14.47 goals per game. Their 152 goals against, 8.9 goals-against average, was good enough for fourth in the conference. Individually, the Privateers have four players over 50 points in Trodden, Danny Connell, Mike Leake, and DeMeo, while both Leake and DeMeo have totaled 55 and 77 goals, respectively. Mark Buchner anchors a defensive unit that has caused 171 turnovers to this point in the season with Buchner causing a team-best 30.
DeMeo has been a one-man offense for SUNY Maritime this season as he has accounted for 98 points thus far. In 17 of the Privateers' 18 games this season, DeMeo has totaled four or more points including a season-high eight three times, including his eight-point performance against the Wolverines in first round of the NCAA tournament. His 98 points this season accounts for 23.7 percent of the team's 413 thus far in 2019.
The X factor
Both teams possess the ability to score, but Brett Malamphy can give Salisbury the edge offensively as he has dominated the faceoff X this season to the tune of a winning percentage of 75.3. His 309 wins are a nation best while his winning percentage ranks seventh. He has also scooped up a team-high 196 groundballs with an average of 9.8 per game, which ranks him 14th. He has also added in three goals this season, including one in the Capital Athletic Conference championship.
The winner of Wednesday's game will advance to the third round on Saturday, May 11 and will square off against the winner of University of Lynchburg and Transylvania University.
