MacLean's three-set win clinches 5-4 victory for Sea Gulls at Occidental

LOS ANGELES – The Salisbury University men's tennis team picked up its 10th win of the 2017 season with a thrilling 5-4 victory at Occidental College on Wednesday night.

The Tigers (3-6) were able to win two of the three doubles matches to take a small lead into singles play. Freshmen Colt Williamson and Ian Siew got the only doubles point for the Gulls, with an 8-5 win at No. 1.

Senior Grant Hudson and freshman Patrick MacLean dropped an 8-5 decision at No. 2 and sophomore Andrew Rainger and freshman Garrett Malave lost 8-2 at No. 3.

Salisbury (10-1) picked up the four points it needed in singles play to claim the victory. Siew earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles, freshman Matthew Ryan won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 6 and Williamson came up with a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 1 to get the Sea Gulls on the cusp of the victory.

MacLean was able to put Salisbury over the top, with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 victory at No. 4.

Hudson dropped his No. 3 match 6-2, 6-4, and the final match of the day came at No. 5, where Rainger fell in three sets 6-0, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).

The Sea Gulls head to Whittier College on Thursday afternoon for a 5 p.m., eastern time contest, as the squad finishes up its trip to California.
