Sea Gulls secure No. 3 seed in CAC tournament with 5-4 win against Southern Virginia

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University men's tennis team concluded Capital Athletic Conference play for the 2018 regular season with a 5-4 victory against visiting Southern Virginia University on Friday at the SU Tennis Courts. The win locked up the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Capital Athletic Conference tournament and with it a first-round bye.

Salisbury (13-5, 5-2 CAC) only garnered one point in doubles play, getting an 8-3 win from Ian Siew and Colt Williamson at No. 1. Matthew Ryan and Patrick MacLean suffered a narrow 8-6 defeat at No. 2 with Stefan Hein and Kelson Weber falling at No. 3 by an 8-4 score.

In singles play, the Sea Gulls earned a point from Weber at No. 5 where the Sea Gull held a 6-4, 2-0 lead at the time that Southern Virginia's T.J. Snelson retired. Ryan picked up a narrow 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 6 and Hein won at No. 3 by a 6-4, 6-2 score.

With one more point in the book for the Knights (15-4, 3-3 CAC), as MacLean took a 6-2, 7-5 defeat at No. 4, the match came down to the top two singles spots. Siew was able to seal the match for the Sea Gulls with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 before Williamson fell at No. 1 in the only three-set match of the day 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.

The match was the first of three over a three-day span this weekend as the Sea Gulls will host State University of New York at Oneonta on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m., before battling Harford Community College on Sunday.
