Tennis opens 2018 with Sea Gull Open
The Salisbury University men’s and women’s tennis teams began 2018 with the 21st Annual Sea Gull Open at the Salisbury University Indoor Tennis Center this past weekend, with current Sea Gulls making deep tournament runs. Sophomore Annika Kezman won three times to earn the women’s championship, coming up with a 7-5, 6-1 win in the title match. Junior Taylor Cooper and Julia Kwedi each advanced to the semifinal round in the draw. Cooper won twice in the tournament, while Kwedi needed just one win to reach the semis. Sophomores Patrick MacLean and Colt Williamson made the men’s doubles championship match, winning their semifinal match 4-6, 6-3, 11-9, but fell in the championship. Classmates Matthew Ryan and Ian Siew advanced to the semfinals, as well, but fell in three sets. In the men’s singles draw, Williamson worked his way into the semifinal round with three victories, but dropped a 6-2, 7-6 decision. Siew, Ryan, and senior Kelson Weber each made it to the quarterfinal round of the singles draw before being eliminated. The men’s and women’s teams will begin their official NCAA season next Saturday, February 17.
