Softball splits doubleheader with Averett

Mar 7, 2017

The Salisbury University softball team split a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon against Averett University at Sea Gull Softball Stadium. In the opener, after the Cougars took a 1-0 lead, Salisbury answered in the bottom of the first inning on Emily Allen’s single up the middle, scoring Mikayla Meehan. It was the only run for the Sea Gulls until their final at bat, trailing 11-1 at that time. LeAnne Collins led the bottom of the fifth off with a bunt single and came around on Annie Pietanza’s single to center field. It was one of two hits for Pietanza, as Salisbury managed just four in the game, falling, 11-2. In the second game, the Sea Gulls got a gem from sophomore Shannon Powell, who went the distance for her first career complete game. Powell struck out four in the contest, while walking only one and scattering six hits. The Cougars got to Powell for three runs in the third, but Salisbury answered in the home half of the inning, scoring all five of its runs, beginning with Collins’ double to center field, scoring Karlie Brenton and Caitlin Lake. Pietanza doubled to tie the game, bringing home Collins from third, bringing about an Averett pitching change. But the switch in hurlers would not deter Allen, as the freshman belted her third home run of the season, a line shot that just cleared the fence for the 5-3 lead. Powell finished the game with a 1-2-3 inning, getting a pop up to end it. The Sea Gulls returns to action this weekend, hosting the Salisbury Invitational, on March 11 and 12.
