LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced its watch list for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division III National Player of the Year award, and two Salisbury University softball seniors are part of that group.
Collins was named a first-team All-American by the NFCA following the 2017 season and was one of 10 finalists for the National Player of the Year award, after finishing the year with the third-best batting average in the nation, having hit .537. Collins also finished in the top-25 nationally in hits, runs per game, slugging percentage, total bases and triples. Along with her national honors, Collins was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year for softball, and was the Female Athlete of the Year for the league, covering all CAC-sponsored sports.
Pietanza was named a third-team All-American following the 2017 season, and was one of the top run producers in the nation, ranking 13th in RBI, driving in 50 runs, and 15th in runs driven in per game. She also connected on a team-high-tying seven home runs, which ranked second in the CAC. Pietanza was named to the All-CAC First Team following the 2017 campaign.
The Player of the Year Watch List will be trimmed to 25 players later in the season and then cut to 10 finalists before the Player of the Year is named following the completion of the NCAA tournament.
The Sea Gulls begin the 2018 season by hosting the Sea Gull Early Bird Tournament on February 24 and 25.
