FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference released its weekly softball awards on Monday afternoon and it was a clean sweep for Salisbury University as Emily Allen and Alexis Layton were named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week respectively.
Allen turned in a solid opening weekend for the maroon and gold, hitting .429 in the first four games of the 2019 season to help Sea Gulls out to a 3-1 start. Allen recorded a double and a triple while driving in four RBI. On Sunday against No. 18 The College of New Jersey, Allen went 3-of-4 at the plate and scored a run to aid in Salisbury's 6-5 win.
Meanwhile, Layton was solid on the mound, making two starts over the weekend and earning two wins. Layton was the winning pitcher against No. 18 TCNJ, striking out two batters in six innings of work against the Lions while allowing just eight hits. Versus the University of Rochester, Layton struck out three batters while surrendering just three runs as the Sea Gulls won in five innings, 11-3.
Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, February 23 when it takes part in the Grand Slam Triangle Classic. The Sea Gulls will take on McDaniel College in their first game at 2:30 p.m.
