Softball swept in doubleheader against Lynchburg

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 17 Salisbury University softball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the University of Lynchburg on Monday afternoon at Sea Gull Softball Stadium.

Game 1: Lynchburg 9, Salisbury 0 (5 inn.)

The opener was scoreless until the second inning when the Hornets put up three runs on four hits. Lynchburg added a run in the second and added five more in the third to open up a 9-0 lead.

Salisbury was unable to get a runner on base in the first three innings against Lynchburg starting pitcher Alex Cisar, but junior Dakotah Fraley broke up the no-hit bid leading off the fourth inning with a sharply hit single up the middle.

The Sea Gulls put two runners on in the bottom of the fifth, with singles by Amelia Trotter and Kendall Dixon, but neither hit resulted in runs for the home team.

Game 2: Lynchburg 5, Salisbury 4

Salisbury (9-4) came out strong in the second game, with starting pitcher Alexis Layton retiring the Hornets (13-1) in order in the top of the first and the Sea Gulls put two runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning.

Jillian Jones walked and Madeira Alexander reached base on a bunt single before both runners came home on Emily Allen's triple to right-center field for a 2-0 lead.

The two-run advantage held until the fourth inning when the Hornets drew even on a two-run double by Morgan Mitchell. A sacrifice fly in the fifth gave Lynchburg a 3-2 lead and a two-run home run pushed the edge to 5-2 in the sixth.

Salisbury would not go quietly, getting back within a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cat Ramagnano singled with one out before Fraley drilled a two-run home run to left field. But 5-4 was as close as the Sea Gulls could get.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Friday, March 15, scheduled for their first road games of the year, heading to No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan University for a doubleheader against the Marlins, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
