Sea Gulls fall in season opener to Rowan
SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury men's and women's swimming teams opened their seasons with a home meet against Rowan University on Tuesday. The Profs came out on top with the Sea Gull men and women falling, 154-101 and 149-104, respectively.
The Sea Gulls started the meet with second-place finishes in the men's and women's 200-meter medley relay. The team of freshman Allison Hamlin, senior Sarah Ault, freshman Nikki Schult and sophomore Taylor Merget earned the Gulls four points with a 2:17.79 finish. Junior James Gough, senior Paul Zoli, junior Chris Franklin and sophomore Rich Ambrose led the men with at time of 1:56.43.
The same men's team also brought Salisbury a second-place finished in the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:44.81).
Schult led the women's side with three second-place finishes, in the 200-meter freestyle (2:20.01), 200-meter butterfly (2:44.10) and 200-meter individual medley (2:38.81).
Senior Staci Carbone and Merget both added two second-place finishes. Carbone finished the 800-meter freestyle in 10:36.06 and the 400-meter freestyle in 5:07.84 while Merget added the 50-meter freestyle (29.07) and 100-meter freestyle (1:04.59).
James Gough, freshman Will Gough and sophomore Daniel Keller all tied to lead the men with two second-place finishes each. James Gough placed second in the 200-meter backstroke, in 2:18.54, and the 400-meter freestyle, in 4:44.12. Keller finished the 200-meter butterfly in 2:22.45 and the 100-meter butterfly in 1:02.72. The trio was rounded out by Will Gough in the 50-meter freestyle (25.38) and the 200-meter individual medley (2:25.14).
Salisbury's next meet will be its first Capital Athletic Conference meet as the Sea Gulls travel to Frostburg State University on Saturday; the meet is set for 12 p.m.
