First Day of Golden Bear Invitational finishes with strong showing from Salisbury
KUTZTOWN, Pa. - The first day of the Golden Bear Invitational at Kutztown University ended on Friday with the Salisbury University men's team in second place with 173 points and the women's team in fourth place with 69 points.
The men's team trails Montclair State University by only 17 points after the first day of action.
The East Stroudsburg University women's team holds the first spot with 207 points, while Montclair State University (154 points) and Kutztown University (149 points) control the second and third spots, respectively.
Freshman Nikki Schult led the Sea Gull women with their highest individual finish, as she placed sixth in the 500-yard freestyle (5:38.19).
The team of seniors Sarah Ault and Meghan Donovan, and sophomores Brittany Steele and Taylor Merget, finished the first part of the meet for Salisbury with a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The group posted a time of 4:27.09.
The men's team started the meet off strong by grabbing two of the top-four spots in the 200-yard freestyle relay. Senior Paul Zoli, junior James Gough, sophomore Rich Ambrose and junior Chris Franklin finished in the second spot with a time of 1:33.31.
Zoli finished in the highest spot for the Gulls in the first session by posting a time of 2:07.93 in the 200-yard individual medley, good for second place.
The Sea Gulls continue the Golden Bear Invitational on Saturday; the meet is set to resume at 10 a.m.
