Sea Gulls drop CAC meet to Mary Washington
SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's swimming teams opened their first Capital Athletic Conference meet of 2013 on Saturday against the University of Mary Washington, as the men fell, 140-65, and the women fell, 170-35.
The Sea Gulls' men's 200-freestyle relay team of sophomore Rich Ambrose, junior Chris Franklin, freshman Will Gough and senior Paul Zoli finished first with a time of 1:43.86 in the meet's final event.
Senior Sarah Ault was one of two women that took third-place finishes for the women's team, in the 100-meter butterfly, with a time of 1:10.68.
Fellow senior, Staci Carbone, joined Ault with the other third-place finish in the 800-meter freestyle (10:37.30).
The quartet of senior Meghan Donovan, freshman Kayla Wumer and sophomores Brittany Steele and Melissa Alessandrini started the day with a third-place finish in the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 2:21.66.
Zoli, Franklin and junior James Gough all finished second in individual events to lead the men's team; Zoli and Gough both placed second in multiple races.
James Gough earned second-place finishes in the 800-meter freestyle (9:39.73) and the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.95), while Zoli placed second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:05.11) and the 400-meter freestyle (4:32.69).
Franklin chipped in by finishing the 50-meter freestyle in 24.62 to take second.
The Sea Gulls will be back in action at home on Saturday against St. Mary's College of Maryland for the team's final regular-season meet, set for 1 p.m.
