SALISBURY, Md. – Senior thrower Jennifer Houghton and senior linebacker Jamey McClendon have been named the 2011-12 Salisbury University Scholar-Athlete Award winners.
Houghton is a four-year letterwinner at SU as member of both the indoor and outdoor track & field teams. She helped the Sea Gulls claim the first-ever Capital Athletic Conference indoor championships in 2012 as well as back-to-back CAC outdoor championships in 2010 and 2011.
The Mount Laurel, N.J., native received CAC Co-Rookie of the Year in 2009 as well as First Team All-CAC honors in the discus, hammer throw and shot put. Houghton was also named First Team All-CAC in 2010 and to the second team in the discus and shot put.
Houghton was also awarded first team All-Mason Dixon honors in 2009, 2010 and 2011. In 2011, she met an NCAA Division III national-qualifying distance in the weight throw after breaking the school record by two feet with a throw of 50' 10".
In addition to her athletic success, Houghton is also an active member in multiple honor societies on campus, including Lambda Pi Eta, Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Eta Sigma. This past year, Houghton was named the President of the Lambda Pi Eta Society, a communication and arts society. A marketing and communications major, she is also a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, Student Athlete Mentors and is an active participant in Relay for Life and "Treat Street," while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
McClendon led the Gulls to their deepest run into the NCAA tournament since 1986 when Salisbury advanced to the national championship game. A team captain started in all 13 games as a senior, posting 93 tackles, including 31 solo stops. McClendon also found his way to the quarterback for five solo sacks and 6.5 overall.
Throughout his four years, the Chantilly, Va., native amassed 170 tackles, two forced fumbles (recovering both) and had 9.5 sacks. McClendon was named First Team All-Empire 8 in 2011 as well as earning Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Week honors on Nov. 7 and was part of the Empire 8 Sportsman of the Year Team. McClendon also earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District Team and was named a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American.
Before joining the Empire 8 Athletic Conference prior to the 2011 season, McClendon garnered second team All-ACFC honors in 2010, and was on the ACFC All-Academic Team from 2008-10. A physical education major, he is a member of the Chi Alpha Sigma and Phi Eta Sigma Societies on campus and has been on the Dean's List since 2009. McClendon contributes in the community with involvement in "Beyond the Limits," "Family Fun Night," "TV Turnoff Week and Leadership Training." For all that he does for the community McClendon was awarded the Community Service Member of the Year Award and was a nominee for the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team in 2010.
