YORK, Pa. – The Capital Athletic Conference announced its weekly men's and women's track & field awards on Tuesday and Salisbury University student-athletes accounted for three of the four honors, including a sweep on the women's side.
Strong performances at the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invitational on Saturday led to junior Kara Tolson and senior Chelsea Tavik claiming the women's Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards, respectively, while sophomore Dylan Burkett was named the men's Field Athlete of the Week.
The honor is the sixth this season and 14th in the four-year career of Tavik, as she claimed two first-place finishes this past weekend. The Glen Burnie, Md., native took the top spot in the shot put (44' 5.25") and discus (127' 6"). She was also the top Division III finisher, placing fourth overall, in the hammer throw (143' 2") and took third place in the javelin (122' 9").
Tolson earned her third CAC award of the season with a pair of top individual finishes and being part of two strong relay finishes. The Bel Air, Md., native won both the 100-meter dash (12.59 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (25.88 seconds) while being part of a third-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay (49.98 seconds) and a fourth-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay (4:10.39).
Burkett had been honored by the CAC once before this week, just two weeks ago, and repeated the feat with three top-six finishes, including an event victory in the discus throw with a top effort of 154' 10", which set a facility record. The College Park, Md., native placed second in the shot put (49' 9.75") as the top Division III performer and placed sixth in the hammer throw (131' 6").
The trio, along with their Sea Gull teammates will be in action on Saturday, traveling to the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport University, on Saturday, April 20.
