Senior Luke Campbell is making his fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA outdoor championships for the 110-meter hurdles, earning the selection with the second-best time in the country. He ran a 14.04-second race at the Colonial Relays on March 31 for the time. This season marks the fourth-straight time that Campbell will be in the 110 hurdles' field at the NCAA championships, as he was won the previous three individual titles in the event.
Campbell will also be making his fourth-straight appearance in the national championship meet in the 400-meter hurdles. He currently holds the No. 1 time in the country heading into the meet, as he ran a 51.24-second time in the Colonial Relays. A win in the race would give Campbell his third-straight championship in the 400 hurdles.
Campbell, junior Jerel Madison, and sophomores Zach Schmelz and Eric Halton will look to defend their 2016 NCAA indoor track & field 4x400-meter relay national championship after qualifying for the outdoor meet with the seventh-best time in the country (3:12.62). They set the time in the final meet of the season before the championships in the Salisbury Elite Meet on Thursday, May 19.
The Sea Gulls have had recent success in the NCAA outdoor championships, coming in the top four in the country three times in the past seven seasons. In the 2010 season, the team finished as the national runners-up, while placing fourth in the country in 2009 and 2015. Last season, the team totaled 13 All-American selections at the outdoor championships in seven different events. Campbell led the way with All-American awards in the 110- and 400-meter hurdles and the 4x100- and 4x400-meter relays.
Closing out on top
By grabbing at least one win in this year's outdoor national championships, Campbell would set the NCAA Division III men's track & field record for most combined individual national championships between the indoor and outdoor seasons. Currently, he is tied for the top spot with nine total championships, and by winning all three events this weekend, Campbell could finish his career with 12 titles.
