SALISBURY, Md. – Senior Katie McGahagan recorded her second consecutive double-double as the Salisbury University women's basketball team held on to defeat Stevenson University, 63-60, in a non-conference contest on Monday evening.
Stevenson (5-10) took a quick 7-2 lead over the Sea Gulls after Stephanie Martinez hit a three-pointer from Kayleigh Guzek before Salisbury would tie the game at 10 each with 12 minutes to play in the first half.
The two teams would be knotted at 15-15 with 8:41 to go before freshman Julia McLaughlin scored five consecutive points, including a steal and layup off a Mustang inbounds play, in a 20-second span.
Salisbury (10-7) took a four-point edge going into the second half, 32-28. Sophomore Anna Hackett contributed 12 points in the opening 20 minutes, finishing with 24 on the night.
The Sea Gulls reached their largest lead of the night just minutes into the second half as Hackett's layup made it an eight-point advantage, 36-28.
Stevenson would take the lead for the first time in the second half with seven minutes to play as Ruth Casadevall connected on a jumper for a 51-50 edge. The lead would not last long though, switching hands until sophomore Courtney McManus hit a shot from beyond the arc with 4:26 to go, giving the maroon and gold a 59-56 lead, the final lead change of the night.
A three-pointer by Stephanie Martinez pulled the Mustangs within one, 61-60, in the closing seconds, but two free throws by McGahagan sealed the deal as Salisbury took the victory by three. McGahagan totaled 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists on the night.
The Sea Gulls will take to the road for their next two Capital Athletic Conference contests, facing off against Marymount (Va.) University at 6 p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 23, before heading to the University of Mary Washington for its second take at the Eagles on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
