Hackett scores 20, McGahagan picks up eighth double-double as SU falls to York
SALISBURY, Md. – Senior Katie McGahagan recorded her second consecutive double-double as the Salisbury University women's basketball team fell to York (Pa.) College, 72-50, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Maggs Physical Activities Center.
McGahagan matched her season-high 17 rebounds and added 14 points and four steals.
Salisbury (10-10, 4-4 CAC) would take the opening lead, 2-0, as sophomore Anna Hackett's drive to the basket resulted in a foul. Hackett hit both tries at the stripe. Hackett led the team with 12 points in the first half and finished the game with a team-high 20 points.
York (17-5, 6-3 CAC) went on a seven-point run before the Sea Gulls climbed within four, 10-6, as Hackett pulled up and hit a jumper with over 11 minutes to play.
At the half, the Spartans held a 39-22 edge over the Gulls. McGahagan and Hackett were both perfect at the free-throw line helping SU with a combined 20 points in the half.
The Sea Gulls were not able to overcome York's advantage at the break, but were able to hold the Spartans to 41 percent shooting in the second half after York was good on 50 percent of its shots in the first 20 minutes. Salisbury forced eight Spartan turnovers in the second period, leading to six SU points.
For the game, SU was perfect from the free-throw line (13-of-13) and held the Spartans to just one three-pointer in the final half (14.3 percent); the Spartans were 66.7 percent from behind the arc in the first period.
York was led by Kristen Haley with 23 points and six rebounds. Brittany Hicks had 13 total points and 14 boards while Aja Wallpher added 10 assists.
Salisbury will next host Marymount (Va.) University on Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 6 p.m., in Maggs Physical Activities Center.
