Women’s basketball falls to Spartans

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team traveled north on Wednesday evening for a Capital Athletic Conference tilt at York College of Pennsylvania, with the Spartans defeating the Sea Gulls, 72-62.

The Spartans (11-11, 6-5 CAC) came out strong, scoring the first seven points of the contest before the Sea Gulls (15-7, 7-4 CAC) got on the scoreboard with a Kaylee Otlowski layup just over three minutes in. An Amber Onyekwere layup moments later cut Salisbury's deficit to three, but York closed the opening frame by outscoring its opponent 14-5 to take a 21-9 lead after the first 10 minutes.

York continued to click on offense by opening the second quarter with a 10-2 run that was halted by a Dalina Julien triple with just under six minutes remaining in the first half. Julien's scored kicked off a quick 9-3 Salisbury run to cut into the deficit, but the Spartans dropped 11 more points in the final three minutes — including three triples — to take a 42-21 halftime lead.

The Sea Gulls began to pick up the pace on the offensive end of the court in the second half, outscoring their opponents in both the third and fourth quarters. The maroon and gold clawed back to within 10 late in the game on a Courtney Brigham jumper, but were unable to get any closer.

Brigham scored her first double-double of the season, tallying team highs with 10 rebounds and 13 points. Kylie Webb also scored 13 points while leading the team with five assists. Megan Konig added another 12 points.

The team returns home on Saturday, February 9 when it hosts CAC opponent Southern Virginia University. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
