Salisbury falls to No. 8 Washington and Lee in double overtime

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 4 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 8 Washington and Lee University 14-13 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon.

Salisbury (2-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes on goals by Lindsey Wagner and Taylor Poore, but Washington and Lee (3-1) responded with two goals of its own to even the score.

Gianna Demato, who led the Sea Gulls with four goals on the afternoon, put the maroon and gold back up by one before the Generals took their first lead of the game, 4-3, midway through the first half.

Demato then started a run of five straight Salisbury goals, including two of her own, two from Emma Skoglund, and the last from Wagner, which put the Sea Gulls up 8-4.

The Generals scored two goals in the final 2:20 of the first half to make it an 8-6 game at halftime.

After Skoglund tallied her third goal of the day to open the second half, Washington and Lee scored two straight to pull within one, 9-8.

Gabby Mongno responded with two of her own while Demato added another to put Salisbury up 12-8 with just under 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

The Washington and Lee defense stepped up the rest of the way, allowing just one goal in the final 25 minutes of play. Following Demato's goal, the Generals used two goals to make it 12-10 before Mongno notched her third of the day to put Salisbury up 13-10 with 10:54 to play.

Washington and Lee scored the final three goals of regulation to force overtime, where they scored with 1:21 remaining in the second overtime period for the win.

Salisbury concludes its three-game road trip on Wednesday, March 6 against No. 20 Rowan University at 4 p.m.
