Lucas's lone goal helps Sea Gulls soar past Knights

SALISBURY, Md. – The Sea Gulls hosted Southern Virginia Saturday afternoon to open up Capital Athletic Conference action, playing the Knights to a 1-0 win off a second half tally from Ruthie Lucas.

The Sea Gulls continued their offensive streak early in the eighth minute when senior Lindsey Andonian broke through the Knight back line and fired a shot, but a well-positioned Megan Turner was there smother the attempt and keep the score level at zero. 

The remainder of the first half would see physical back and forth play from both sides with the Sea Gulls outshooting the Knights 6-2 and earning three of the four corner kicks in the half. Knussman earned two saves for the Sea Gulls while Megan Turner posted three saves for the Knights.  

Neither team would see many opportunities on goal in the second half as both keepers tallied a combined three saves in the half. Junior keeper Hope Knussman would come up big for the Sea Gulls in the 52nd minute when she deflected a well struck hit from Tatiana Monsen over the bar to keep the game tied at zero.
  
The game would remain scoreless until the 77th minute when Lucas gathered a pass, broke through the Knights' back line and ripped a shot into the far upper 90 to break the deadlock and give Salisbury what would turn out to be the game winning goal.
  
Salisbury would go on to outshoot Southern Virginia 10-7, both teams split corner kicks with three a piece, while Knussman and Turner notched four saves a piece between the posts.
  
The Sea Gulls return to the SU Soccer Complex tomorrow, Sunday September 25th, to take on the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College, the game is set for 3 pm.
