Early goals sink Sea Gulls in shutout loss to Roanoke

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team made their final appearance of the Shellenberger Classic on Saturday afternoon when they took on Roanoke College falling to the Maroons 3-0. It was the Sea Gulls' second shutout loss in as many days.

The Maroon and Gold did not fare well in the early going, allowing two goals in the first 15 minutes of regulation. The first goal, scored by Jamie Obremski, scooted into the net just three minutes into the match. Emily Whitaker doubled her team's lead when she lifted a shot just over the reach of goalkeeper Hope Knussman and under the crossbar just 12 minutes later.

Ruthie Lucas led the team with five shots, four on goal, but was unable to tally her first marker of the season. Her best play of the game came in the 12th minute when she found open field up the left side for 20 yards before lifting a shot towards the near side post, but Roanoke goalie Chris Martin squared up in time to make the save.

The Maroon's third goal of the match came in the 60th minute on a breakaway by Ellie Shad who launched a dart to the right side of the net just past a diving Knussman.

Salisbury's 14 total shots almost tripled Roanoke's five while the Maroons held the edge in corner kicks three to two.

The Sea Gulls will look to turn things around this coming Wednesday when they travel to Virginia Beach, Va. to take on Virginia Wesleyan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
