Women’s soccer team grounded by Eagles

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team returned home on Saturday afternoon to take part in the school's annual homecoming festivities. Visiting on the afternoon was Capital Athletic Conference rival the University of Mary Washington Eagles, who came away with the 1-0 victory over the Sea Gulls.

The Sea Gulls (5-7-1, 2-2 CAC) also held their annual Pink Day raffle to help raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation and support breast cancer awareness month, as well as honor their two graduating seniors, Abby MacDonald and Liz Fenton as a part of Senior Day.

Salisbury had an opportunity to get on the board first in the fifth minute but could not convert on a shot attempt by Ally Goetz. Goetz's shot from the right side of the box looked headed for the net but hung just outside the near post.

The Eagles (8-2-1, 4-0 CAC) had their best scoring opportunity with 12 minutes to go in the first half when Lindsay Hendrickson broke through the defense outside the right corner of the box. Goalkeeper Regan Benton sprinted forward to cut off the angle, but Hendrickson was able to get by and cross the ball to teammate Anna Longacher. Longacher lined up a shot from the far post, but Benton rushed back and put her body on the ball to make the timely save.

Mary Washington came out strong in the second half, recording eight shots in the first 20 minutes before converting on shot number nine. A corner kick by Hendrickson crossed in front of the net where teammate Malorie Joseph took two consecutive shots on goal, but both were blocked and rebound back out into traffic. A third shot by Katie Rauch found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Eagles kept strong pressure on the Sea Gulls following the score, but the Salisbury defensive unit, led by Jenna Beck, Kayla Homeyer, and Juliana Looney, fended off their opponents to hold the deficit to one.

Salisbury had a late push to try to even the score, but ultimately fell to the Eagles, 1-0.

The team returns to action when it travels to face Christopher Newport University on Wednesday, October 17. The primetime match is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
