Women’s soccer team falls to Spartans

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team wrapped up its regular season on Wednesday afternoon when it hosted Capital Athletic Conference opponent York College of Pennsylvania. The Sea Gulls could not overcome two second-half goals and fell to the Spartans, 2-1.

The first half began with the Spartans (8-9, 4-3 CAC) winning the battle for ball control, as York recorded the first six shots and were awarded four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes. After a few substitutions were made from the Salisbury bench, the Sea Gulls (6-9-1, 3-4 CAC) began to swing the momentum and push the ball into their offensive zone. Despite plenty of chances from both teams, the game remained scoreless at halftime.

York broke into the scoring column first in the 53rd minute when Caitlin Rankin sent a corner kick across the front of the net before teammate Megan Stoltzfus deflected the ball off her head and into the back of the net.

The Spartan lead doubled in the 68th minute on a goal by Georgia Gillcrest. Stoltfus received a cross from Rankin and almost headed in her second goal, but the ball deflected off the crossbar and back down in front where Gillcrest scooped it up and sent it across the goal line.

Salisbury battled back and made a late push to try and get itself back into the game when it cut the lead in half on a goal by Kara Schmidt. A pass from teammate Madison Hogsten set Schmidt up just outside the top right corner of the box in time to drill a shot off the far post that took a favorable bounce across the goal line for the score.

A shot by Hogsten in the 88th minute was the final opportunity for the Sea Gulls, but Spartan goalkeeper Jess Wieber made the save to secure the victory for York.

The Sea Gull loss coupled with a late victory by Frostburg State University over Penn State University-Harrisburg sets the table and locks Salisbury into the No. 5 seed. The team will travel to Frostburg State on Saturday, October 27 to face the fourth-seeded Bobcats in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. Kickoff time is still to be determined.
