FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team traveled to the University of Mary Washington for the ITA Southeast Regional Women's Tennis Championships this past weekend, coming out with some strong performances.
In the championship singles draw, sophomore Annika Kezman earned a pair of wins, coming up with victories of 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-0 before going three sets with Vinaya Rao of Carnegie-Mellon University, falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Julia Kwedi picked up a win in the opening round, ahead 4-6, 7-5, 2-0 when her opponent retired due to injury, but Kwedi would be forced to do the same thing in the second round, after dropping her first set but leading 3-2 in the second.
In the Blue 1 draw, sophomore Jordan Schaefer advanced to the semifinal round, getting wins of 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 and 6-1, 6-3 before falling to the eventual champion, 7-6, 6-3. Sophomore Taylor Cooper fell in the opening round, but picked up one win in the consolation bracket.
Freshman Sydney Soto picked up a win in the Blue 2 draw 6-1, 6-0 before falling in the second round.
Junior Shannon Hickman picked up a pair of hard-fought wins in the Blue 3 draw to advance to the semifinals, winning 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 in the opening round and getting a 7-5, 6-1 win the second before falling 7-6, 6-2 to the eventual champion Jingzi Wu from Franklin & Marshall College.
Freshman Ariana Leggio made the deepest singles run of any Sea Gull, playing in the final of the Blue 4 singles draw. She won the opening two rounds in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2 before coming from behind for a 3-6, 6-1, 12-10 win in the semifinals. In the championship match, she dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision.
Leggio nearly faced off against one of her new teammates in the championship match as senior Sage Cole made it to the semifinals, with wins of 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 and 6-1, 6-0 before falling 6-3, 7-5.
Cooper and Shaefer were able to collect a first round win in the championship doubles draw 8-6 before falling in the second round by an 8-3 score.
Hickman and Leggio dropped their opening round match in the Blue 2 doubles draw 9-7 but made a run through the consolation bracket, winning both of their matches there, 8-1 and 8-4.
