FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team took part in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southeast Regional this weekend at the University of Mary Washington with junior Jordan Schaefer taking a singles title in her draw.
Schaefer won four matches to claim the Singles C draw, winning in her first match 8-2 before facing her closest contest in the second round, winning 9-8 (7-4) over Stevenson University's Jenna Skove – the fourth-seeded player in the draw. Schaefer won 8-2 in the semifinals before defeating Muhlenberg College's Caroline Armknecht in the championship match, 8-5.
Sophomore Sydney Soto played in the same draw, earning an 8-4 win in the first round, before falling by a narrow 8-6 score in the second round.
Schaefer and Soto paired together in the top doubles draw, earning a 9-7 win in the opening round, before falling 8-2 in the second round.
Junior Annika Kezman picked up two wins in the top singles draw, winning in three sets in the opener to advance with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory and a 6-3, 6-3 win in the second round. Her run came to an end at the hand of the eventual champion Danna Taylor. The Carnegie Mellon University product topped Kezman 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore Laura Brown earned two wins in the Singles B draw, advancing to the semifinals with wins of 8-3 and 8-5 before falling to Johns Hopkins University's Jessica Liang, 8-2.
Senior Shannon Hickman rolled to an 8-0 win in the opening round of the Singles D draw before being outlasted by Southern Virginia University's Lauren Morrison, 9-7, in the second round.
The Sea Gulls will open their spring schedule hosting the Sea Gull Open at the Salisbury University Indoor Tennis Center on February 8 and 9, 2019.
