Strong singles play gives women's tennis 6-3 win at Occidental

LOS ANGELES – The Salisbury University women's tennis team dominated singles play to earn a 6-3 win at Occidental College in the team's first match of its spring break trip to California on Monday evening.

Senior Taylor Cooper and sophomore Laura Brown earned an 8-2 at No. 2 doubles before the Tigers (5-7) picked up two wins in doubles play. Juniors Annika Kezman and Jordan Schaefer dropped an 8-6 match at No. 1 while sophomore Sydney Soto and freshman Sarah Dover fell at No. 3 by an 8-3 score.

Salisbury (4-2) was able to win five of the singles matches to earn the victory. Kezman won the most contested singles match, going three sets – two of which required tiebreakers – claiming a 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 7-6 (7-3) victory.

Brown picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 2 while Cooper came up with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 3. Soto earned a win at No. 4 by a 6-0, 7-5 score while Schaefer won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5. Senior Shannon Hickman fell at No. 6 by a 7-5, 6-4 score.

The Sea Gulls return to action on Wednesday, March 20 traveling to California Lutheran University, beginning at 4 p.m., eastern time.
