Women's tennis earns two CAC wins on Sunday

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's tennis team picked up a pair of Capital Athletic Conference victories on Sunday defeating Penn State University-Harrisburg and York College of Pennsylvania.

Salisbury 5, Penn St.-Harrisburg 1

Playing singles first with rain expected to come in during the morning, Salisbury completed three matches outdoors for a 3-0 lead before the weather rolled in, forcing the completion of the match indoors.

While playing outside, freshman Sarah Dover picked up a win at No. 2 by a 6-1, 6-1 score while junior Kayla Allen closed out a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 4, and freshman Karlie Allen earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.

The Sea Gulls led in two of the remaining three singles matches when moved to the Indoor Tennis Center with freshman Kathryn Allen getting the next point by a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles before sophomore Laura Brown sealed the win for the Sea Gulls, claiming the No. 1 match 6-2, 6-2.

The final singles match went to the Lions (5-9, 0-3 CAC) with Elyse Mellott topping sophomore Ariana Leggio by a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) score in the No. 3 match.

Salisbury 6, York 0

Salisbury (7-4, 3-0 CAC) swept the three doubles points to begin the match with junior Jordan Schaefer and sophomore Sydney Soto picking up an 8-0 win at No. 2 to get things started. Junior Annika Kezman and Brown won 8-3 at No. 1 before senior Taylor Cooper and Dover earned an 8-2 win at No. 3 to get the 3-0 lead.

Playing to a decision, Salisbury won the first three singles matches to finish the contest. Kezman picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 while Cooper and Soto closed things out with 6-1, 6-0 victories. Soto took the No. 3 match just moments before Cooper finished off the No. 2 match for the win over the Spartans (6-3, 1-2 CAC).

The Sea Gulls will be back on court on Saturday, April 6 at Southern Virginia University, continuing CAC play.
