Volleyball blanks PSU-Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Salisbury University volleyball defeated Pennsylvania State University-Harrisburg 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Sea Gulls posted a team hitting percentage of .287 and totaled 36 kills while holding the Lions to a percentage of -.102.

The Sea Gulls (13-5, 2-0 CAC) claimed the first set by the final score of 25-11. Both teams battled back and forth in the opening set with neither able to gain much of an advantage in the early going. After PSU-Harrisburg (6-8, 1-1 CAC) pulled within three at 9-6 Salisbury used a 13-2 run to take a 22-9 lead. Six different Sea Gulls tallied kills during the run with Katie Stouffer tallying three kills of her own. For the set, Salisbury posted a hitting percentage of .500 totaling 13 kills on 24 total attacks while committing only one error.  

In the second set the Sea Gulls fell behind 9-6 but battled back to retake the lead at 12-11 and never looked back. Salisbury used a 9-2 run to blow the match open and take a 21-13 lead. Stouffer tallied three kills during the nine-point run. However, the Lions rallied back scoring three straight points to pull within five, 21-16. The Sea Gulls used a two point run behind a kill from Jordan Lawson and a service ace by Rachel Dubbs to end the set and secure the 2-0 advantage. Salisbury totaled ten kills in the set and held PSU-Harrisburg to a hitting percentage of -.172.

The Lions jumped out to a 10-8 lead in the third and final set and looked as if they would force a continuation of the match. After Salisbury battled back to tie the match at 15-15 the Sea Gulls used a 5-1 run to take a 20-15 advantage. Two Salisbury players tallied kills while Krista Pecenka recorded a service ace. After PSU-Harrisburg battled back to pull within two, 20-18, the Sea Gulls tallied four of the final five points to secure the victory. Salisbury totaled a hitting percentage of .222 and recorded 13 kills while holding the Lions to a -.056 hitting percentage.

Stouffer led the Salisbury attack totaling 18 kills posting a hitting percentage of .567 while Dubbs posted a team-high hitting percentage of .667. Gina Fischetti tallied a team-high 3 service aces while Shannon Russell led the defense with 12 digs on the afternoon.

Salisbury will travel to Christopher Newport on October 7 for a 7 p.m. match.
