Salisbury vs. Washington College
The Salisbury University volleyball team hosted its home opener on Wednesday night and downed eastern shore rival Washington College in straight sets to send the Shorewomen back to Chestertown, Maryland with their first loss of the season. The Salisbury defense held Washington in check throughout the night limiting the Shorewomen to a -.122 hitting percentage, allowing just 16 kills while forcing them into 28 attacking errors. On the flip side the Sea Gulls totaled 35 kills, posted only 13 attacking errors while totaling a team hitting percentage of .229. Nicole Venturelli posted a team and match-high eight kills on the night off 24 attacks. Venturelli also tallied five digs to aid in a strong defensive performance by the maroon and gold. Three players on Salisbury finished the night with seven kills each as Carley Cleland, Amanda Chew, and Gianna Savarese combined for 21 of the team’s 35 kills. Chew also picked up five digs and three blocks while Savarese and Cleland combined for just one attacking error and posted team-high hitting percentages posting marks of .500 and .438 respectively. Kate Shea posted five kills of her own in the match on 13 attacks while also picking up one dig and a block. Savarese also turned in a solid defensive performance posting a team best four blocks as Salisbury accounted for 10 as a team. Hailey Dougherty led all players with a match-best 18 digs and three service aces. Salisbury returns to action on Friday, September 7 when it travels to Washington D.C. to partake in the Catholic University Tournament. The Sea Gulls will take on Chatham University at 2 p.m. in their first match before taking on Wesley College at 4 p.m. in their second match.
