Men's and women's teams take fourth in Fall Classic

SALISBURY, Md. - The Salisbury University men's and women's cross country teams opened their season on Saturday morning hosting the Salisbury University Fall Classic at Winterplace Park. The men's and women's teams both collected a fourth place finish in the race.

The women's team raced first with senior Anna Steinman as the Sea Gulls' top finisher.  Steinman finished 10th overall with a time of 23:02. She was followed closely by her Salisbury teammates to give the Gulls a score of 129 points.

Freshman Kira Polimeni began her Salisbury career with a 23rd-place finish as the second Sea Gull to cross the finish line with a time of 23:30. She was followed by senior Becca Stinner (23:43) who finished 31st, freshman Hailey Spinapont (24:07) who finished 37th and senior Emily Powell (24:11) who finished 39th. Rounding out the Sea Gull scoring, sophomore Emma Bahneman (25:07) and freshman Madison Ross (25:23) finished the race 63rd and 70th, respectively. 

The Rowan University women's team claimed the victory with a total of 44 points just ahead of Loyola (Md.) University with 46 points. John Carroll University came in third with 57 points. Rowan University's Jena Peacok finished first in the women's race with a time of 21:19.

The Sea Gull men got off to a quick start in their race which helped them maintain a strong showing in the standings. Salisbury finished fourth in the men's race, as well, with 83 points.

The Gulls were led by sophomore Ryan Jackson's second-place finish with a time of 25:36. Senior John Fitzgerald was close behind with a time of 26:10 that was good for seventh place. Four Salisbury runners would then finish in four consecutive spots. Sophomore Joel Anderson (27:35), senior David Toller (27:39), junior Tyler Miluski (27:46) and sophomore Adam Rudy (27:48) finished 25th through 28th, respectively. Freshman Alex Arias finished 32nd with a time of 27:57 to finish out the Gulls' scoring.

Rowan University also took first in the men's race with a score of 40 points followed by Messiah College (57 points) and John Carroll University (71). Messiah's Tyler Newhook finished first with a time of 25:34.

Salisbury will be in action again on September 17 at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational starting at 10 a.m.
