Spinapont places second as Sea Gull men and women place third at CAC Championships

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Salisbury University men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Western Maryland for the Capital Athletic Conference Championships and each team came back with a third-place finish.

Sophomore Hailey Spinapont was the highest finisher in either event for the Gulls, taking second place in the women's race, covering the 6,000 meters in 24:01.74 to help Salisbury to 70 points. The University of Mary Washington claimed the team championship with 29 points, followed by York (Pa.) College, six points back.

Freshman Kyle Tockman led the men's team with a sixth-place finish in 27:59.82. Tockman's points helped Salisbury to 66, trailing team champion York, which had 32 points, and second-place Mary Washington (46 points).

The Sea Gull women had three runners finish in the top 20 in the race, with senior Jessie Early claiming 15th with a time of 25:37.12 and junior Claire Lawrence coming home in 26:00.26 to claim 19th.

Junior Emma Bahneman, who finished 24th in 26:20.12, and sophomore Olivia Cloud, who finished the race in 26:32.69 to take 29th, rounded out Salisbury's scoring.

Sophomore Kira Polimeni (26:42.20, 31st place) and junior Michele Stromberg (26:48.01, 33rd place) finished out Salisbury's top seven in the race.

Four Sea Gulls placed in the top 20 on the men's side. Freshman Thomas Burke came across the finish line just 11 seconds behind Tockman (28:10.08) to place 10th while sophomore Jeremy Skarda finished 13th in 28:27.03.

Junior Nathan Austin was the 18th runner across the line, in 28:46.57 while junior Matthew Hallenbeck finished 23rd in 29:05.55.

Senior Tyler Miluski and junior Adam Rudy came across the finish line back-to-back in 30th and 31st, respectively, finishing in 29:32.45 and 29:34.57 to round out the top seven for the Sea Gulls.

The teams will return to action in two weeks, traveling to the NCAA Mideast Regional in Carlisle, Pa.
